One year ago, the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) invited the world to come to 6 Degrees Citizen Space. And, the world came – 5,000 people from 28 countries – answering the call for a safe debate on inclusion and belonging. These are people who believe that we matter to one another.
From September 25 to 27, the second annual 6 Degrees Citizen Space will ignite 5,000 participants at 12 events over three days in a unique program that encompasses large-scale lectures, dynamic conversations in the round (the signature 6 Degrees “360 sessions”), intimate exchanges, public celebrations, original research, youth-driven projects, artistic engagements, and an opportunity to experience the power of an ICC community citizenship ceremony. During the 360 sessions, speakers will frame important and urgent conversations on a round central stage, with the ongoing shaping of the conversation by the audience. The three 360 discussions (focused around the themes of Walls, Bridges, and Homes) will be punctuated with smaller group exchanges focused on relevant topics ranging from the power of the image (film and photography) in inciting action, sanctuary cities, the state of social activism in Quebec, the role that art can play in shaping the immigration situation, the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and immigrants, the situation of statelessness in Latin America and Europe, new ideas of democracy. All of this will culminate in the final Open Forum.
Speakers at the event include the Chinese artist and renowned activist Ai Weiwei, Michael Sandel, Professor of political philosophy at Harvard University, Margaret Atwood, author of more than forty books of fiction, poetry, and critical essays, Yannis Behrakis, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, and Sunny Bergman, documentary filmmaker and writer, amongst others,
